The 2024 Gates Cambridge Scholarship in the United Kingdom is now open for applications. This scholarship, funded by The Gates Foundation and hosted by the University of Cambridge, is available for international students pursuing master’s and PhD programs. It offers a fully funded opportunity for all foreign students except UK nationals. The Bill and Melinda Gates Scholarship has a separate application process and deadline for US citizens and non-US citizens.

The Gates Foundation established the Gates Cambridge Trust by donating US$210 million to the University of Cambridge in October 2000, marking the largest donation ever made to a UK university. Each year, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awards over 80 scholarships through the Gates Cambridge Scholarship program, with 55 of these available to students globally and 25 specifically designated for students from the USA.

Applications for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship for both international and US students opened on September 4, 2023, with the deadline for international applications set for December 5, 2023.

Program Benefits:

Recipients of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2022 can avail of several benefits, including the University Composition Fee, a maintenance allowance for a single student, economy travel for one person, reimbursement for inbound visa fees, funding for academic development, a family allowance, fieldwork funding, and maternity and paternity leave. These benefits cover up to £17,500 for a 12-month educational period, up to £4,320 for a second child, and up to 4 years of study. However, no financial support is provided for partners.

 

Eligibility Criteria:

The Gates Scholarship is open to citizens of any country outside the UK applying for a PhD, MSc/MLitt, or a one-year postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge. Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and a strong case for their chosen course.

 

Application Procedure:

Applicants must submit their admission and financing applications through the University’s Graduate Application Portal. This involves completing the entrance and college application sections as well as the Gates Cambridge funding component for the scholarship’s consideration.

After completing the interview stage, you'll need to wait for the business school to make their decision. If you receive an offer, accept it within the specified deadline to secure your place on the programme.

Prepare for interviews

If your application is shortlisted, you may be invited to an interview with the admissions committee. This is an opportunity to showcase your passion for the Programme, discuss your experiences, and demonstrate your suitability for the MBA. Prepare by practising common interview questions and researching the programme thoroughly.

Apply directly to the business school

Unlike undergraduate admissions, MBA applications are typically submitted directly to the business school through their online application system. Pay close attention to deadlines and ensure you submit a complete and accurate application.

Prepare a compelling application

An MBA application usually consists of the following components:

  • Personal details: Your full name, contact information, and nationality
  • Professional resume: A detailed resume highlighting your work experience, education, and achievements
  • Personal statement or essays: Written responses to specific prompts, showcasing your motivation for pursuing an MBA, career goals, and how the programmes will help you achieve them
  • References: Letters of recommendation from current or former supervisors, colleagues, or professors who can speak to your professional and personal qualities
  • Test scores: Official scores from the GMAT/GRE and English language proficiency tests, if required

Check entry requirements

Each MBA programme will have specific entry requirements, which may include:

  • An undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification
  • Work experience, typically a minimum of 2-5 years in a managerial or professional role
  • English language proficiency (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE scores)
  • GMAT or GRE scores, though some programmes may waive this requirement

Once you've submitted your application, you'll need to wait for the universities to review it and make their decisions. If you're successful, you'll receive a conditional or unconditional offer. You'll need to accept an offer within the specified deadline to secure your place.

Review your application thoroughly and then submit it. Before it can be sent off to any universities/colleges, you’ll need to get a reference and pay your application fee. You will need to find a suitable referee, whether a teacher or an employer. We will advise you on this. The application fee is unfortunately not refundable.

Register in the UCAS Hub and complete the registration questions, confirming key details such as the year you want to start your studies (and that you are interested in ‘Undergraduate’ level of study).

In the UCAS Hub dashboard, you’ll see a title called ‘Your application’ which is where you can begin your application. There is substantial information required here so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to take breaks and come back to it, to get everything right.
